How to Get Classic Wedding Photos Without Stiffness

A lot of couples tell me they want classic wedding photos — but in the same breath, they’ll say they don’t want anything that feels stiff, awkward, or overly posed. The good news? Those two things don’t cancel each other out. Classic wedding photos don’t have to feel forced. They don’t have to look uncomfortable. And they definitely don’t require you to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for long stretches of time.

Trust the Process (Even When It Feels a Little Weird)

Some of the most natural-looking photos start with a pose that feels… not that natural. That doesn’t mean something is going wrong. It usually just means you’re in the setup phase. Your photographer is thinking about light, angles, and composition — things that matter for creating timeless images. Once that foundation is set, the real magic happens in the moments between. Trusting the process gives you space to relax into it.

Movement Is Your Best Friend

If you feel stiff, the photos will look stiff. It’s that simple. Classic photos don’t require stillness — they require connection. Small movements like shifting weight, walking slowly, leaning into each other, or even adjusting your hands can completely change how a photo feels. Movement softens everything. It creates natural lines, relaxed expressions, and photos that feel alive instead of posed.

Laugh a Little (Even If It’s at Yourselves)

You don’t have to be a naturally “cute” couple to get great photos. Most people aren’t. Laughing — even awkward laughter — breaks tension instantly. Some of my favorite images happen right after a moment that felt slightly silly. Those reactions are real, and they photograph beautifully. You don’t need to force emotion. Just let yourself respond honestly.

Guided Doesn’t Mean Forced

One of the biggest misconceptions about classic wedding photos is that they’re overly rigid. In reality, the best classic images are gently guided, not micromanaged.

Good photographers know when to:

  • Step in and offer direction

  • Adjust positioning for better light

  • Then step back and let moments unfold

That balance is what creates photos that feel polished and natural.

The Goal Is Ease, Not Perfection

Classic wedding photos aren’t about looking perfect — they’re about looking like yourselves, clearly and beautifully, in a way that still feels timeless years from now. If you’re willing to trust, move a little, and laugh when things feel awkward, you’ll end up with images that feel effortless — even if they didn’t start that way.
