Do You Really Need a Second Photographer at Your Wedding?
When couples start planning their wedding photography, one of the big questions that often comes up is: Do we really need a second photographer?
The short answer? Not always.
I’ll break down what a second photographer actually adds, why I personally rarely use one, and the situations where it can be worth it for you.
Why I Don’t Rely on a Second Photographer
When I first started photographing weddings back in 2020, I was working during the era of smaller celebrations. I learned how to document wedding days solo - capturing everything from getting ready through the reception - without needing an extra set of hands. Over the years, that skill has only gotten sharper.
Even during seasons of motherhood when I occasionally brought in a second photographer (mainly so I could step away to pump without missing a moment), I noticed the final gallery didn’t drastically change. Shoutout to my amazing photographer friends who helped me in that season - your work was wonderful! It’s just that I’ve always felt confident in covering everything my couples need, even when it’s just me behind the lens.
That said, if a couple feels strongly about it, I’m always happy to add a second photographer to a package.
What a Second Photographer Can Add
While not essential, a second shooter can bring a few extras to your wedding gallery:
Multiple Angles During the First Look
Imagine seeing both your expression and your partner’s in the same moment. A second photographer makes this possible.Different Perspectives During the Ceremony
While I’m capturing the big walk down the aisle, a second photographer might focus on your partner’s reaction - or a tearful parent in the crowd.Coverage in Two Places at Once
If the bride and groom are getting ready in different locations, having a second photographer ensures both stories are captured at the same time.
Do You Actually Need One?
Most of my couples don’t - and they’re thrilled with their galleries. If you value a more streamlined experience and trust me to capture all the big and small moments (posed, candid, and everything in between), one photographer is often more than enough.
But if you love the idea of multiple perspectives, especially during emotional moments like the first look or the ceremony, adding a second photographer can be a worthwhile upgrade.
At the end of the day, it’s about what matters most to you: efficiency and simplicity, or extra angles and coverage.
Final Thoughts
Wedding photography should be about preserving the moments you care most about - without overcomplicating things. If you’re unsure whether you need a second photographer, I’d be glad to talk it through with you and help you decide what fits your day best.
