5 Easy Ways to Look More Natural in Your Engagement Photos

Let’s be honest—most couples aren’t professional models. If you’re nervous about how you’ll look in your engagement photos, you’re not alone! Nearly every couple I photograph tells me they’re “awkward in front of the camera”… and then proceeds to absolutely rock their session.

Here are five super simple tips I share with all my couples to help them feel more confident and relaxed—and yes, get those dreamy, natural-looking photos:

1. Movement is your best friend

Staring at the camera and holding a stiff pose? No thank you. I’ll give you prompts like walking, spinning, or swaying together to keep things moving naturally. Not only does it help loosen you up, but it also leads to those in-between laughs and glances that make for some of the best photos.

2. Don't worry about your hands (I’ve got you)

Hands are weird. Everyone feels like they don’t know what to do with them—and that’s totally normal! I’ll guide you through easy ways to hold hands, touch your partner’s arm, or play with their jacket so it feels natural (not like a senior photo circa 2009).

3. Interact with each other—not the camera

The more you focus on each other, the more genuine your photos will feel. Whisper a joke, bump hips while you walk, sneak a forehead kiss. I’ll give you gentle direction so it never feels forced, but those sweet, candid moments? They usually come when you forget the camera is even there.

4. Say yes to the awkward laugh

Fake laughs often lead to real ones, and I will one hundred percent ask you to do a few. It might feel silly, but trust me—it works. It loosens you up, breaks the ice, and usually ends with a real, genuine smile. (And sometimes a snort. No judgment.)

5. Trust the process—and your photographer

You don’t have to know what you’re doing. That’s my job. I’ll walk you through every step—when to move, where the light is best, how to pose in a way that still feels like you. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. And that’s what makes your photos beautiful.

Bonus Tip: Wear something that makes you feel amazing and isn’t fussy. Comfort shows on camera. If you feel great in what you’re wearing, it’ll come through in every photo.
