How to Handle Rain on Your Wedding Day (Photo Edition)
Rain on your wedding day is supposed to be “good luck,” right? Honestly, I think that’s just something people say so brides don’t cry on the spot. But as a photographer, I’ll tell you this: rain can absolutely still make for gorgeous wedding photos - if you’re prepared. Here are my best tips for handling rain on your wedding day (photo edition).
1. Have a Good Attitude
This might sound cheesy, but it’s the number one thing that will make or break your rainy wedding photos. If you let the weather stress you out, it’s going to show on your face. If you decide to roll with it, laugh a little, and trust the process, you’ll still get beautiful photos. Honestly, some of my favorite weddings are the ones where couples just embraced the weather. Remember Rachel & Caiden? The rain didn’t stop them - in fact, it made their photos even more magical.
2. Have a Backup Plan (Duh)
I know - this feels obvious, but it matters. Whether that means booking a venue with indoor options, renting a tent, or at least knowing where you’ll go if the skies open up, having a plan B takes away so much stress. Even if we don’t end up using it, you’ll feel better just knowing it’s there.
3. Bring All the Umbrellas
I mean all of them. Clear ones look amazing in photos, but even black or white umbrellas can make rainy shots feel romantic and cozy. Plus, they give you the freedom to still go outside without worrying about your hair or makeup getting ruined in the first 30 seconds.
4. Don’t Expect Your Dress to Stay Dry
This is the part where I’ll probably get some flack - but I’m just going to say it: if you’re set on outdoor photos, your dress is going to get wet. And muddy. And maybe even a little torn at the bottom. I don’t say this to scare you; I say it so you can be realistic. I promise the photos will still be stunning, and your dress will still look incredible in them. Just don’t expect it to be pristine by the end of the night.
The Bottom Line
Rain isn’t ideal, but it doesn’t have to ruin your wedding photos. Keep a good attitude, have a backup plan, stock up on umbrellas, and don’t stress about the dress. At the end of the day, the weather is out of your control - but your memories (and your photos) are still going to be beautiful.
