The Value of an Engagement Session (Even if You Hate Photos)

If the thought of taking engagement photos makes you cringe, you’re not alone. A lot of couples tell me they feel “awkward in front of the camera” or worry that their session will just feel… forced. But here’s the truth: an engagement session is one of the most valuable things you can do before your wedding day - and not just because you get cute photos out of it.

1. Save the Dates, Invitations, and Your Wedding Website

Let’s start with the obvious perk: photos you can actually use. Engagement photos are perfect for Save the Dates, invitations, your wedding website, or even framed prints at the reception. Instead of digging through old iPhone selfies, you’ll have images that reflect who you are right now, in this season of life.

2. Get Comfortable with Your Photographer

Your photographer is one of the only people you’ll spend the entire wedding day with. I’m there from getting ready through the reception, which means we’ll be together even more than you’ll be with most of your bridal party. The engagement session gives us time to hang out without the wedding-day pressure. You’ll see how I work, I’ll learn your quirks and personalities, and by the wedding day, taking photos will feel natural instead of nerve-wracking.

3. Figure Out What Works for You

An engagement session is basically a test run for your wedding photos. This is where we figure out what poses and vibes feel right for you. I’ve had couples tell me on the wedding day, “Oh I remember how to do this pose!” or, “Actually, we didn’t love how that one looked - can we skip it today?” Both responses are amazing because it means we’re not wasting time trying to figure it out during the chaos of the wedding. Instead, we can jump right into the good stuff and capture you feeling confident.

The Bottom Line

Even if you think you’ll hate being in front of the camera, engagement sessions are worth it. They give you photos you’ll actually use, help you feel comfortable with your photographer (hi again), and make wedding day portraits smoother and more fun. Trust me - by the time the wedding rolls around, you’ll be glad you did it.
