Why You Shouldn’t Skip Sunset Photos on Your Wedding Day
There’s a reason wedding photographers are always talking about “golden hour.” Sunset is one of the most flattering times of day for portraits, and it creates photos with that dreamy, glowy light you’ll treasure forever.
And while it might feel like stepping away from your reception is a hassle, I promise - sunset photos are always worth it.
Extra Time for Bride & Groom Portraits
Your wedding day flies by. Between getting ready, the ceremony, and family photos, it can feel like there’s barely a moment to breathe.
Sneaking out for 10–15 minutes at sunset gives you a chance to slow down and get a fresh set of portraits as newlyweds. Who doesn’t want more photos of the two of you together? These often end up being some of my couples’ absolute favorites.
A Break from the Reception
As much as you love celebrating with your guests, sometimes you just need a moment to catch your breath. Sunset portraits double as a built-in break from the noise, giving you space to be together one-on-one.
It’s usually just long enough to reset, soak it all in, and then head back to your reception ready to dance the night away.
Why Sunset Light Matters
The difference between midday light and golden hour light is huge. While midday sun can be harsh and shadowy, sunset light is soft, warm, and flattering. It creates that natural glow you see in so many romantic wedding portraits.
If you’ve ever scrolled Pinterest and stopped at a photo thinking, wow, that lighting is gorgeous - chances are, it was taken at sunset.
Final Thoughts
Sunset portraits aren’t just about pretty light (though the light is unbeatable). They’re about slowing down, enjoying a quiet moment together, and capturing timeless photos you’ll love forever.
So, if you’re tempted to skip them, take my advice: don’t. Set aside the time for those glowy golden hour portraits — you won’t regret it.
