What’s Really Worth the Investment on Your Wedding Day (and What Isn’t)

Let’s be real—wedding budgets are a balancing act. Everyone wants a beautiful, meaningful day, but figuring out what’s actually worth investing in (and what isn’t) can feel overwhelming.

After years working in the wedding industry—from managing venues to photographing weddings—I’ve seen which decisions really elevate the day… and which ones don’t matter nearly as much as you might think. Here are my top tips for what’s genuinely worth the splurge—and a few areas where you can confidently save.

Things That Are Totally Worth the Money:

1. Real Flowers (Yes, Really)

Florals completely transform your space and your photos. They add softness, movement, and color in a way that artificial options just can’t. You don’t need to go over-the-top—just shop in season and trust a good local florist. Even a few thoughtfully placed fresh blooms can elevate everything.

2. Pocket Boutonnières

These little gems deserve their own category. Pocket bouts are clean, modern, and eliminate the chaos of pinning traditional flowers onto jackets five minutes before portraits. They photograph beautifully and save time on the wedding day.

3. A Naturally Beautiful Venue

Choose a space that speaks for itself and doesn’t require tons of décor to feel special. Whether it’s a historic chapel or a scenic garden, a well-designed venue becomes the backdrop for everything else—and can actually save you money in the long run.

4. Good Food

Your guests will talk about the food—especially if they’ve traveled. Investing in a quality caterer ensures everyone is well-fed, happy, and energized for the dance floor. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should be tasty and thoughtfully done.

Things You Can Totally Save On:

1. Faux Florals for Decor

Yes, I just told you to spend on real flowers… but I don’t mean everywhere. For centerpieces, aisle décor, and tablescapes, faux flowers and candles can go a long way. Most guests won’t remember the exact flower on the welcome table—but they will remember the mood, the lighting, and how it all came together.

2. Cake

Cake artists, please don’t hate me—but I’ve seen some of the biggest rave reviews come from Sam’s Club or Walmart cakes. If you’re not a huge cake person or you just want something simple and tasty, a budget-friendly option is totally valid (and honestly, sometimes delicious).

3. Favors

This might be unpopular, but favors almost always end up left behind or tossed. Unless it’s something truly personal or edible, most guests won’t miss them—and that’s money you could reallocate toward food, florals, or your honeymoon.

Bonus Thoughts:

Consider Spending On: Bridal Hair

If there’s ever a time to feel confident and pampered, it’s your wedding day. I don’t think it’s essential, but having your hair done professionally can make you feel your best and give you one less thing to stress over.

Don’t Feel Pressured to Splurge On: Makeup

This is totally personal. If you’re someone who doesn’t wear much makeup normally, heavy wedding glam might make you feel… not like yourself. I’ve seen brides who skip professional makeup and look totally radiant because they feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.

Every wedding is different. At the end of the day, it’s about creating an experience that feels true to you. But if you’re unsure where to focus your energy (and budget), these are the areas I’ve seen make a real impact—for both your experience and your photos.
