How to Get the Most Out of Your First Look

If you’re planning a first look on your wedding day, you already know how special it can be. Whether you’re hoping for an emotional reaction or just want a quiet moment together before the ceremony, this part of the day often becomes a favorite memory for couples.

Here are a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your first look—without overthinking it.

1. Make it private

As much as I love a cheering bridal party, your first look is one of those moments that feels extra special when it’s just the two of you. No onlookers. No pressure. Just space to react however feels natural.

2. Don’t put too much pressure on it

Will he cry? Maybe. Will he just smile really big and say, “You look amazing”? Also maybe. Either one is perfect. Everyone reacts differently, and the goal is connection—not performance.

3. Don’t rush it

Give yourselves a few minutes to breathe. Talk. Hug. Take it in. I’ll guide you into portraits afterward, but I always step back for a bit so you can just enjoy the moment before we jump into posing.

4. Skip the veil (for now)

One fun trick? Save the veil for later. That way, when you walk down the aisle, you get a kind of “second” reveal moment. It adds another layer of sweetness and helps make the ceremony feel fresh and emotional too.

5. Hand off your bouquet

You’re going to want to hug, spin, twirl—maybe even dance a little. Holding your bouquet can make that harder than it needs to be. I’ll usually offer to hold it for a few minutes so you’re free to move and connect.

Bonus tip? Just be present. Let the moment unfold however it does, and know that it’s beautiful—tears or no tears, nerves and all. First looks are one of my favorite things to capture, and I’m always happy to help guide you through it so it feels like you.
