5 Things Every Couple Should Do Before Their Wedding Day for Better Photos

When couples ask how to get the best wedding photos possible, my answer usually isn’t about poses or camera settings — it’s about preparation. A few simple steps before the wedding day can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out (and how stress-free the day feels). Here are five things I always recommend to my couples before the big day.

1. Finalize Your Timeline with Your Photographer

This is easily the most important step. Your wedding photographer should help you plan a timeline that works around lighting, travel time, and what’s most important to you. This is why I send all of my couples a Timeline Questionnaire early on — it helps us build a custom photography schedule that fits your exact day. Once we’ve finalized it together, you’ll know exactly when each part of the day happens, and I’ll know where to be and when. Win-win.

2. Communicate the Shot List (Clearly)

Make sure your family and wedding party know in advance if they’re part of formal photos. It sounds simple, but this one thing prevents a lot of stress and confusion after the ceremony. Whether you want a few big family groupings or just the essentials, a short and clear shot list ensures we capture everyone important to you — and keeps things moving smoothly.

3. Schedule an Engagement Session (Even if You’re Camera-Shy)

Engagement sessions aren’t just about getting more photos — they’re a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and see how your photographer works. By the time your wedding rolls around, you’ll already know what poses feel natural, how I give direction, and what angles you love best. It makes your wedding day photos so much easier — and honestly, more fun.

4. Prep the Details You Want Photographed

If there are special details you want captured — invitation suite, perfume, jewelry, vow books, shoes — set them aside the night before in one place. That way, when I arrive, I can jump right into photographing those details while everyone finishes getting ready. A little preparation here saves time and ensures nothing gets missed in the morning rush.

5. Take Care of Yourselves

This one might sound cliché, but it matters more than anything else on this list. Get a good night’s sleep. Eat breakfast. Drink water. It’s so easy to get swept up in wedding week stress, but when you feel good — hydrated, rested, and present — it shows in your photos.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a complicated prep routine to get amazing wedding photos. Just a little organization, clear communication, and self-care go a long way toward making sure your photos reflect the joy and ease of the day.
