What to Wear for Engagement Photos (Tips from a Photographer)

Let’s be real - figuring out what to wear for your engagement session can feel weirdly stressful. You want to look your best (obviously), but you also want to feel like you. And spoiler alert: that second part matters way more than most people think.

After photographing dozens of engagement sessions across Missouri, here’s my honest take: the best outfit is one you’re comfortable in. That’s it. That’s the rule.

Still want a little more direction? Don’t worry - I’ve got you. Below are a few simple tips to help you choose outfits that feel good, look great in photos, and won’t make you cringe later.

1. Comfort is Key - Seriously

If you never wear heels in real life, don’t wear them for your session. If that dress you bought only stays in place with a prayer and four layers of shapewear, skip it. You’ll spend the whole time adjusting, and it will show in the photos.

Pick something you can move in, breathe in, and be yourself in. You’ll look more natural—and actually enjoy the session more, too.

2. Think Coordinated, Not Matching

You don’t need to be twins. Instead of matching exactly, try coordinating colors and textures that look good together. Neutrals always photograph well, and soft, earthy tones tend to complement nature really beautifully (think sage, dusty blue, cream, terracotta, charcoal).

Avoid super busy patterns or logos—they can distract from your faces and the overall feel of the photo.

3. Bring Two Outfits if You Can

If your session includes time for two outfits (like most of my Signature Engagement Sessions do), I recommend one slightly dressier outfit and one more casual. It gives you variety in your gallery and helps the photos feel more “you” overall.

Pro tip: choose outfits you can change into easily (especially if we’re shooting in nature or public areas). A car-change situation is pretty common!

4. Dress for the Season

This one’s simple but often overlooked - if it’s chilly out, bring layers. If it’s hot, choose breathable fabrics. You’ll be way more relaxed and less red-faced or stiff in your photos if you’re not freezing or sweating through your shirt.

If you're not sure when to schedule your session, check out this post on when to take engagement photos by season and lighting.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Text Me Options

I mean it. If you’re stuck between two outfits (or four…), shoot me a quick message. I’m always happy to help you decide what photographs best for the time of year, lighting, and location.

Also - if you’ve already booked with me, don’t forget to check out my Engagement Session Guide with photo examples and location inspiration. There’s a little extra outfit guidance in there, too.

Bonus Tips:

  • Make sure your clothes are wrinkle-free (especially button-downs!)

  • Don’t forget to remove any wallet or phone from your pockets during photos

  • If you're wearing something flowy, make sure it catches the breeze—we’ll take full advantage!

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, these photos are about you two. So whatever you wear, make sure it reflects your style, your vibe, and your real-life love story.
