When to Schedule Your Engagement Photos (By Season & Lighting)
One of the most common questions I get from couples after they book their wedding photography package is: “When should we take our engagement photos?”
And while there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, I always recommend considering two main things: the season and the lighting. (And yes, those go hand in hand!)
First Things First: What’s the Vibe You’re Going For?
Before we even talk about seasons, ask yourself this: What kind of look do you want for your engagement photos?
Do you love wildflowers and soft greens? Moody fall leaves? Cozy layers? Clean, modern lines with neutral tones?
The overall vibe will help determine what season and time of day will work best.
Let’s Break It Down by Season
Spring
Best Months: Late March – Early May
Why It’s Great: Fresh blooms, soft colors, and that dreamy early green you only get once a year.
Keep in Mind: Spring weather in Missouri can be very unpredictable. One week it’s 80 degrees, the next it’s hailing. But when it’s good? It’s so good.
Best Lighting: Golden hour (about 1.5–2 hours before sunset) is magical with all the fresh greens and florals.
Summer
Best Months: Late May – Early August
Why It’s Great: Long days, lots of green, and plenty of evening light to work with.
Keep in Mind: It can be HOT. I recommend morning sessions if you’re worried about heat - or aim for the very end of golden hour to avoid squinting and sweating.
Best Lighting: Mornings before 9 AM or golden hour (especially in shaded or open-air locations like Finley Farms).
Fall
Best Months: Mid-September – Late October
Why It’s Great: Gorgeous foliage, cooler temps, and golden everything. This is my busiest season for a reason - fall just photographs beautifully.
Keep in Mind: It books up fast! So if you want those orange and yellow tones, reach out early.
Best Lighting: Golden hour is unbeatable in fall. Everything just glows.
Winter
Best Months: December – February
Why It’s Great: Clean, neutral backgrounds, moody skies, and the chance of snow.
Keep in Mind: It’s cold (obviously), so I recommend shorter sessions and layered outfits. But if you want cozy vibes, this can be a perfect fit.
Best Lighting: Mid-afternoon is ideal since the sun sets early. Winter light is softer, but also shorter - so timing is key.
Morning or Evening?
While I usually recommend golden hour in the evening, there are some locations that photograph beautifully in the morning - especially if you’re going somewhere popular and want to avoid crowds. I’ll always help guide you based on your location choice!
A Few Other Things to Consider:
Outfits: If you’re planning more formal outfits, think about how they’ll match the season (and how hot/cold you’ll be).
Wedding Date: Want to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates? Plan to shoot at least 2–3 months before you need them printed.
Busy Season: Fall dates go fast! If you want October photos, book them early.
Still Not Sure? Let’s Talk It Through.
If you’re stuck between seasons or just not sure what will feel most “you,” I’m always happy to help you decide. I’ve photographed couples in every season and can show you real examples of what each one looks like at my favorite locations. (In fact, you can preview some right here.)
Whenever you’re ready, let’s plan a session that fits your vision - and makes you feel completely at ease in front of the camera.
