What to Do If Your Engagement Session Feels Awkward
Let’s just get this out of the way right up front: feeling awkward during your engagement session is completely normal. I don’t care how confident you are in real life or how photogenic you think you’re supposed to be — most couples feel at least a little uncomfortable when photos first start. And that does not mean your session is going badly. In fact, awkwardness is often part of the process that leads to the best photos.
Stay Calm (Nothing Is “Ruined”)
If you start feeling stiff or self-conscious, take a breath. Truly. Nothing is ruined. Nothing has gone wrong. Your photographer has seen this hundreds of times, and they’re not judging you or panicking — they’re just guiding you through the warm-up phase. Most engagement sessions need a few minutes to find their rhythm. That’s expected, not a failure.
Don’t Get Frustrated With Yourself
One of the quickest ways to stay stuck in awkwardness is getting mad at yourself for feeling awkward in the first place. You don’t need to suddenly become a “photo person.” You don’t need to force confidence. You just need to stay open and keep going. Awkward doesn’t mean bad — it usually just means new.
Trust the Process (Even If It Feels Weird)
A lot of poses and prompts feel strange in the moment. You might think, “Why are we standing like this?” or “This feels so unnatural.” Here’s the thing: what feels weird while it’s happening often looks incredibly natural on camera. Trust that your photographer is watching how you move, adjusting as needed, and choosing angles that work in your favor — even when it doesn’t feel graceful from your perspective.
Don’t Take It Out on Your Partner
This one matters more than people realize. When nerves kick in, it’s easy to get snippy, quiet, or short with the person standing closest to you — which is usually your partner. But engagement photos go best when you’re on the same team. If something feels awkward, say it out loud. Laugh about it. Reset together. A little grace goes a long way.
Laugh at the Awkwardness (Seriously)
Some of the best engagement photos happen right after an awkward moment. The laugh that follows a weird pose. The glance you give each other when something feels silly. The shared “what are we doing?” moment — those are gold. Even awkward laughs look amazing on camera. They’re real, and they create connection.
The Big Picture
Engagement sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about getting comfortable, building trust with your photographer, and learning what works for you as a couple.
If you feel awkward at first, you’re doing it right.
