Engagement Session Checklist: Everything to Bring (and Leave at Home)
You’ve scheduled your engagement session, picked your outfits, and chosen your locations — now it’s time to pack a few essentials to make the session go smoothly. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping you comfortable and relaxed (and it keeps us from having to say “we’ll fix it in Photoshop”). Here’s a quick checklist of what to bring — and what’s better left behind.
What to Bring to Your Engagement Session
Your Engagement Ring
It might sound obvious, but it’s easy to forget! Give it a quick clean before your session so it sparkles in those close-up shots.
Comfy Shoes
If your session involves walking between spots (and most do), bring a pair of flats or sneakers for in between. You can swap back into your photo shoes once we’re at the next location.
Layers
Even in Missouri, the weather can surprise us. A cozy sweater or jacket can make all the difference if the temperature drops — plus, it adds an extra outfit look without the full wardrobe change.
Water (if it’s hot)
A hydrated couple is a happy couple. Bring a water bottle or two, especially if your session is during the warmer months.
Hand Warmers (if it’s cold)
Cold fingers can make it hard to relax and show off that ring, so stash a few hand warmers in your bag if we’re shooting in the cooler months.
What to Leave at Home
Your Phone
Tempting as it is to check messages or take behind-the-scenes photos, your phone is best left in the car (or at least tucked safely away). You’ll be more present — and your pockets will thank you.
Your Keys (Keep Them in a Bag)
Jingling keys in a pocket are the enemy of candid photos. If possible, stash them in a small bag or jacket pocket instead.
A Bad Attitude
Okay, this one’s mostly a joke — but seriously, come ready to have fun! Engagement sessions are meant to feel relaxed and joyful, not forced or stressful. The best photos happen when you’re simply enjoying the moment.
Final Thoughts
The goal isn’t to pack everything you own — just the little things that make your session go smoothly. A bit of prep helps you focus on what really matters: celebrating this sweet season of life together.
