How to Choose an Engagement Session Location That Fits You
Choosing an engagement session location can feel oddly stressful — especially when you start scrolling Pinterest and suddenly feel like every couple is supposed to be standing in a dramatic field wearing linen outfits at sunset. Here’s the truth: there is no single “right” engagement session location. The best location is the one that actually fits you. I always tell my couples that engagement photos should feel like an elevated version of real life — not a costume, not a performance, and definitely not something that feels forced. When the location matches your vibe, everything else falls into place much more naturally.
Start With Who You Actually Are
This sounds obvious, but it’s the most important step. If you’re not formal people, don’t choose an extremely formal location just because it looks pretty in photos. And if you are formal people — lean into that! Engagement sessions are one of the few times you get to choose something that feels very “you” without worrying about guests, logistics, or traditions.
Think about how you spend time together:
Are you more laid-back and casual?
Do you love getting dressed up and going downtown?
Do you feel most comfortable outdoors or inside?
Do you want your photos to feel cozy, editorial, playful, or classic?
Those answers matter more than any trending location ever will.
Match the Location to the Feeling You Want in the Photos
Different locations create very different moods — even with the same couple. A natural setting with open space often feels relaxed, romantic, and timeless. Urban locations lean more editorial and modern. Indoor locations can feel intimate and cozy, especially if the weather isn’t cooperating. None of these are better than the others — they just tell different stories. If you want soft, natural photos where movement feels easy, a busy downtown sidewalk probably isn’t the best fit. If you want something bold and modern, a quiet field may not feel exciting enough.
Don’t Choose a Location That Fights You
One of the fastest ways to feel awkward during photos is choosing a location that doesn’t align with your comfort level. If you’re already nervous about being photographed, a crowded, high-traffic area might make things harder. If you love people-watching and don’t mind attention, it might energize you instead. This is also where logistics matter more than people expect. Some locations are beautiful but restrictive — limited access, early closing times, or lighting that only works at very specific hours. Those things don’t make a session impossible, but they do affect how relaxed the experience feels.
Your Photographer’s Input Really Matters Here
A big part of my job during engagement session planning is helping couples choose locations that will actually work — not just look good on Pinterest. Lighting direction, crowd patterns, seasonal changes, and backup options all matter more than most couples realize. A location that photographs beautifully in October may feel completely different in March. A spot that works perfectly at sunrise might not work at all in the evening. If you’re stuck between a couple of ideas, this is a great time to lean on your photographer’s experience. They’re not trying to control the session — they’re trying to make sure it feels easy and looks great.
You Don’t Have to Nail It Perfectly
One last thing I always remind couples: engagement sessions are not a test. They’re a chance to get comfortable, learn how your photographer works, and create photos that feel like you. If you love the location, great. If you realize afterward that you’d choose something slightly different next time, that’s okay too.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s connection.
